A Night of Presence in a Time of Loss

On Tuesday evening, 28 July, Stella Maris Antwerp was called to provide pastoral support to the crew of a vessel following the sudden death of one of its seafarers.

Several hours passed before we were able to visit the vessel, as the police, investigators, and other authorities first had to complete their work. Just before midnight, we were finally able to board the ship.

The captain welcomed us and asked us to spend time with two crew members who had been with their colleague at the time of the incident. While cargo operations were taking place, the oiler suddenly collapsed. His fellow crew members immediately tried to revive him, and other officers joined in their efforts. A helicopter ambulance was called, but despite everyone's best efforts, he passed away within minutes.

The seafarer had been on board for almost a month. He leaves behind his wife and three children.

The crew members who witnessed the incident were deeply shaken. Many were struggling with feelings of guilt, wondering if there was anything more they could have done to save their colleague. Their grief, shock, and helplessness were evident as they shared their experiences.
