Standing with Seafarers After a Gas Leak Incident

In the days following a recent toxic gas leak aboard a container vessel in the Port of Antwerp, several seafarers remained confined to their ship while safety procedures were completed. During this challenging time, Stella Maris Antwerp reached out to the crew with a message of solidarity and hope.

Stella Maris chaplains Fr. Edzel and Fr. Kiran, together with our new volunteer Bjorn, visited the seafarers on board. Bringing small gifts, they spent time listening to the crew, sharing conversations, and offering encouragement.

For seafarers, unexpected situations can be especially difficult. Being far from home, separated from loved ones, and unable to leave the ship can leave crew members feeling isolated and anxious. A personal visit reminds them that they are not forgotten and that someone genuinely cares about their wellbeing.

The crew warmly welcomed the visit and deeply appreciated the opportunity to talk, smile, and connect. What may seem like a simple gesture can have a profound impact on those living and working at sea.
