Sinterklaas Visits and Karaoke Night Bring Joy to Seafarers in the Port of Antwerp

On 6 December 2025, Stella Maris Antwerp, together with ASW partners, organised a joyful and memorable Sinterklaas and Karaoke Night dedicated to seafarers in the Port of Antwerp. The day was marked by warmth, celebration, and heartfelt encounters, reflecting our continued commitment to the welfare and pastoral care of those working far from home at sea.

The celebrations began during the day with a special Sinterklaas outreach across the port. Two dedicated teams travelled through the port area, visiting ships on both the right and left banks of the Port of Antwerp. Disguised as Sinterklaas, our volunteers and chaplains were warmly welcomed on board, bringing smiles, seasonal cheer, and small gifts to seafarers of different nationalities. 

These visits offered not only festive joy but also moments of personal connection, conversation, and encouragement for crew members who often spend long periods away from their families.

In the evening, the celebrations continued at the Seafarers’ Centre with a lively karaoke night. Seafarers gathered to relax, sing, and enjoy a sense of community in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. The event became even more special as it turned into a surprise celebration for Stella Maris Port Chaplain, Fr. Edzel Cabñas, who marked the 10th sacerdotal jubilee of his priesthood. The surprise was thoughtfully initiated by the Filipino Catholic community of Antwerp, adding a deeply meaningful and emotional dimension to the evening.

Songs, laughter, and heartfelt tributes filled the centre as seafarers and guests joined in celebrating Fr. Edzel’s decade of priestly service. In total, around 45 seafarers participated in the event, making it a truly vibrant and uplifting gathering.

The Sinterklaas and Karaoke Night once again highlighted the importance of companionship, faith, and celebration in supporting the lives of seafarers in our port.
